Ms. McCusker has been a Lower Elementary Montessori teacher for 15 years, and has been at MSM for 5 years. She received her BA in History and Political Science at Duke University, and her Montessori diploma from the Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies. She is also trained in Interactive Metronome, a therapeutic modality that improves cognitive and motor skills, and Montessori Applied to Children at Risk. She enjoys reading, solving crosswords, biking, hiking, camping, kayaking, and gardening. Her personal mission statement: "I believe each student should be treated with respect as an individual. Different students learn at different rates and have different interests, and I believe these should be recognized and supported. I believe that each teacher should protect and encourage the inspiration of each child. I believe that it is a teacher's role to travel the road of discovery alongside the students so they can find their own paths, rather than being led by adults. I chose to teach in a Montessori school because the Montessori Method most closely aligns with my personal philosophy. I was first a Montessori parent and found that the experience for my children closely matched the way I taught them at home. In a Montessori classroom, I can interact with my students as whole people who have feelings and experience challenges, as well as academic learners. I have the privilege of observing the blossoming of their personalities in addition to watching their academic growth. As a Montessori teacher, I never have to ask a child to accept as fact something I tell him or her. Together, we can use the tools available to us in the classroom to find out "why." As a Montessori teacher, I am a conduit for human knowledge to pass from one generation to the next, an act that I believe is more important than almost anything else humans do."
